Office of the Police Commissioner
The Police Commissioner is the Executive Head of the Boston Police Department and is responsible for the management, planning, direction and control of the Department.
Under the direction of the Police Commissioner, the Department is focused on Community Policing, building trust with the communities it serves through all of its interactions and efforts to keep the pubic safe. Policing in America began in Boston, and to remain one of the best Departments in the country it must constantly be evolving and growing partnerships with stakeholders. The Department engages in data-driven policing, utilizing and initiating best practices for training, support, supervision, career advancement opportunities and recruitment of officers and civilians to sustain Boston as a safe and vibrant City.
Office of the Superintendent-In-Chief
Reporting directly to the Police Commissioner, the Superintendent-in-Chief is the highest-ranking police officer in the Department. The Superintendent-in-Chief is responsible for the development, review, evaluation, and recommendation to the Police Commissioner of policies, procedures, and programs necessary to ensure the implementation of community policing and the effective delivery of police services to the public.
Bureau of Field Services
The Bureau of Field Services has primary responsibility for the implementation of Community Policing and the delivery of effective and efficient police services to the community, as well as primary responsibility for the delivery of general, tactical police services and joint Bureau operations, unless otherwise directed by the Police Commissioner.
Bureau of Investigative Services
The Bureau oversees the activities of the citywide investigative Divisions. The Bureau includes the Investigative Planning Unit, the Major Case Division, the Criminal Investigation Division - comprised of the Homicide Unit, Fugitive Unit, and District Detectives - as well as all BPD units that make up the Family Justice Division.
Bureau of Professional Standards
Reporting directly to the Police Commissioner, this Bureau has responsibility for ensuring that the professional standards and integrity of the Department and its members are maintained.
Bureau of Professional Development
Responsible for providing extensive training to all Department personnel, including student officers, in-service, and specialized training.
Bureau of Intelligence & Analysis
Management responsibility for implementing data and information fusion and facilitating the sharing of homeland security-related and crime-related information and intelligence. BIA manages the overarching process of coordinating the flow of information across all bureaus of the department and across all levels and sectors of government and private industry. Bureau efforts support risk-based, information-driven decision making and addresses immediate and/or threat-related circumstances and events by producing real-time, actionable intelligence products.

Bureau of Administration & Technology
The Bureau of Administration and Technology oversees and manages all business, financial and technology operations and functions for the Department.
The Bureau directs, manages and provides policy guidance and oversight to the budget, human resources, payroll, planning and research, procurement, grants, facility management and information technology functions within the Boston Police Department to accomplish its mission of public safety and community policing.
Bureau of Community Engagement
The Bureau (BCE) is tasked with implementing the Commissioner’s vision of community policing throughout the city and the Department. The Bureau of Community Engagement has officers assigned to it that oversee BPD exclusive programs for youth and older adults as well as working with the Boston Public School. The Bureau strengthens existing relationships and trust with community partners; creates new partnerships and initiatives with the community and other agencies; and promotes inclusion and diversity, as well as working with marginalized and disenfranchised populations.
BCE works closely with the Community Service Officers in each of the Departments 11 district stations which fall under the command of the district Captains.
BCE has engagement programming created and operated by officers assigned to the unit. These programs are unique and allow the officers to deliver positive experiences to those that take part in them (students, parents, teens, senior citizens, etc.). These programs utilize the assistance of our community partners both public and private to deliver meaningful and fulfilling experiences that strengthen the relationships of the police and the public.
